Sunflower Award Honorees

Celebrating the skillful, compassionate service support staff provide every day

Dody Dailey, Environmental Services Aide

August 2022 — Dody Dailey is the first two-time winner of the Marshfield Medical Center-Beaver Dam Sunflower Award!

Dody previously earned the Sunflower Award in May 2021 while working in the Emergency Services Department. She has since become an Environmental Services Aide with the Surgical Services Department and quickly earned the praise of her new colleagues.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE SUNFLOWER AWARD

“Dody is a newer addition to the surgical services department, but on days without her we definitely feel her absence!” said Alex Elbe, who nominated Dody. “After Dody rapidly acclimated to her new responsibilities, she immediately began to exceed her expectations and has been indispensable in every way. Any time her hands are empty she asks ‘What can I do? or ‘How can I help?’ Because she is exceptionally observant, she started picking up on other small tasks within her scope that she facilitated. I firmly believe that Dody’s beneficence and compassion for the staff and patients not only helps the nursing and medical staff have an expedited and more enjoyable day, but these experiences directly translate to improved patient satisfaction.”

OTHER NOMINEES — Catie Koss, Physical Therapist; Abby Kruchten, Point of Entry Ambassador; Amanda Pike, Radiologic Technologist; Aubrey Boehler, Point of Entry Ambassador; Megan Rennhack, Respiratory Therapist; Jennifer Yelczyn, Clinical Dietitian; Samantha Neary, Physical Therapist.

Katie was nominated by a patient who had three surgeries, each one a month apart. Each surgery required a COVID-19 test, and Katie went above and beyond to ensure the patient was not only able to have the test administered, but that the results were made available to the surgeon in time.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE SUNFLOWER AWARD

“Katie is an amazing example of excellent customer/patient care,” the patient said in the nomination. “I want to recognize Katie for not only being very good at her job, but also keeping her word and assuring she does what she says she will. She is such a positive young lady, kind and very efficient.”

Stefanie McKnight, Occupational Therapist

October 2021 — The opportunity to make significant positive impacts on our patients’ lives is why many MMC-BD employees got into health care. This quarter’s Sunflower Award winner Stefanie McKnight, OT, is a perfect example of the potential we all have to change people’s lives for the better. A mother with a child diagnosed with autism said in her Sunflower nomination that meeting with the MMC-BD team was the first time she felt hope since her daughter’s diagnosis.

From the nomination: “Stefanie greeted my daughter on her level and immediately started bonding with her. She spoke TO my daughter, not at her, not around her. She asked me questions about my daughter as she interacted WITH her and she seemed to enjoy the time with her . . . this department has not let me down but has given me HOPE and I feel so good about where my daughter’s treatment is going. I know it’s not the typical treatment they provide to this area in that setting but this mama can finally sleep at night knowing she has the best OT and SPL around and that the rehab clinic has some excellent precautions in lace with masks and cleaning policies of equipment. Thanks you for having Stefanie and thank you for growing in this area.”

Other Nominees — Danielle Hoske, Guest Services Ambassador; Alyssa Isensee, Phlebotomist; Gary Meinholdt, Environmental Services; Karly Anderson, Speech Language Pathologist; Laurie Schroeder, Administrative Secretary; Jim Feil, Food & Nutrition Director.

Dody Dailey, Environmental Services

May 2021 — Dody Dailey has been a member of the Marshfield Medical Center-Beaver Dam Environmental Services team for over three years. In that time, she has distinguished herself as someone that truly cares about providing a clean hospital for the patients we serve here in Beaver Dam.

She strives every single day to ensure that the Emergency Department is exceptionally clean, so that the clinical staff can deliver the care that is needed in a safe environment. She holds herself to a very high standard that is evident to everyone that works with her every day. We are all blessed and grateful to have Dody as a part of our team.

“When Doty is in the Emergency Department cleaning she is ALWAYS working hard," said the Emergency Department colleague who nominated her. "She is a member of our team and we know we can count on her. When we start our morning at the Emergency Department and see Doty will be our housekeeper for the day the nursing staff cheers! We know that the department will be clean and sanitary for our patients. We appreciate her so much.”

Mary Corbett, Guest Services Ambassador; Tara Kienast, Medical Imaging

March 2021 — We have two honorees for this quarter’s Sunflower Award! Mary Corbett and Tara Kienast were nominated by a patient.

In a moment of distress for the patient, Mary was calm and empathic, escorting the patient in a wheelchair before working on solving the patient’s problem, putting herself in the patient’s shoes. “Her cheerful demeanor and friendly greeting assured me I was in good hands,” the patient stated.

Mary teamed up with Tara to care for the patient’s pressing need, and through great collaboration, positive interactions and exemplary three-way communication, made the patient feel respected and cared for, creating an excellent patient experience.

Mary has been an employee with MMC-BD for 10 years and works as one of the Guest Service Ambassadors. She has been a pioneer with the new department and has been a wealth of knowledge. She embodied the values of her department and organization with her actions and proved once again that what we do each day matters.

Tara has been with MMC-BD for over 21 years, starting out as a CNA in Hillside Manor before moving to Medical Imaging as a Unit Clerk II position for the last five years. She is very knowledgeable of her area of work, works very well with her teammates, and always keeps the patient at the center of her interactions.

“I had never met either of them before, but the empathy they displayed toward me was exceptional,” the patient said.

Sherry Bisbee, Pharmacy

August 2020 — Sherry Bisbee is the August 2020 Sunflower Award winner and was nominated by a colleague.

According to her team, Sherry has provided excellent care to Marshfield Medical Center-Beaver Dam patients in the retail pharmacy for more than three years. There are many attributes that make Sherry a great pharmacist but what is appreciate most is her ability to practice in a caring, thoughtful and professional manner.

Sherry is selfless with her time and puts the needs of her patients and coworkers above her own, to ensure they have a positive experience at the pharmacy. She continues to dedicate her time to providing higher level services to ensure patients have access to the care they need. A few highlights include: immunizations, medication compliance packaging and compression stocking fitting.

These attributes were exemplified during the start of the Pandemic when the pharmacy closed its doors to walk-in business. She did an excellent job leading the implementation of new services such as: expanded delivery services, mail order service and curbside pickup. This was essential in assuring the safety of our patients and staff, while still providing the high quality care we’ve become accustomed to at Marshfield Medical Center-Beaver Dam Pharmacy.

Congratulations to Sherry on the Sunflower award! It is well deserved and we are very fortunate to have her in the pharmacy department.

Other Nominee — Dan Nitschke, Med/Surg.

Haley Barnes, Emergency Department Technician

April 2020 — Haley Barnes is the April 2020 recipient of the Sunflower Award and was nominated by her colleague, Liz Mathis.

“Haley is a PCT in our emergency department and I wanted to nominate her for The Sunflower Award because I believe she demonstrates excellence in her work every day. Haley always has a positive attitude and when working with her she spreads her positive energy to others. She is always willing to help when asked and goes beyond by asking what she can help with. When Haley works with patients she is patient and kind to everyone she comes across and you can see how much she enjoys helping people when she interacts with them. One of the most recent examples I can give of how I believe Haley deserves the award is at the beginning of the night I said in passing that we were low on kits and how tonight when things settled down we should make up extras for the next few days. Later in the night I went to grab supplies for the kits and they were already made up. I asked where they found some kits and another staff member said Haley made them up already. Haley made up these kits in addition to her normal duties without being asked and she was working a short shift that she picked up to help out a co-worker. As I said, this was just the most recent example of her going above to provide excellent care in our department.”

Haley is going on to study to be a Physician Assistant beginning in May 2020.

"I worked as an Emergency Department Technician with MMC-BD for a little over a year and I have learned so much from my wonderful co-workers and by working with our patients," Haley said. "It's given me a lot of great experience as I continue schooling to become a physician assistant. I am incredibly grateful for my time here."

Other Nominees — Holly Graber, APNP, Clinics; Jody Weber, Home Health; Nate Seay, Inpatient Services.

Chelsea, Multi-Modality Technologist, Medical Imaging

January 2020 — Chelsea was nominated by her fellow MMC-BD team member, Amy.

Chelsea has worked in the Medical Imaging Department for almost 8 years. She started out in Imaging during her clinical rotation for the Radiography Program and then joined our team as an X-Ray Technologist. Chelsea has a passion for learning and has recently moved to a Multi-Modality Technologist position, working in XR, CT and Ultrasound. She models teamwork daily and is willing to go the extra mile, often without being asked. She has a warm and positive personality that is contagious to those around our facility.

Chelsea cares about patients that are in her care and displays great compassion and empathy for others while striving to ensure they all have a positive experience.

Kayla Sharpee, PT, Rehabilitation Services

October 2019 — Kayla was nominated by one of her patients.

"Kayla Sharpee has been a Physical Therapist at Beaver Dam Community Hospital for 3 years. There are so many things that make Kayla a great therapist, employee, and colleague, but above all other things, Kayla is caring.

She cares about her patients. She works to make sure that each of them receives the best therapy; getting to know them personally and taking the time to make sure that their treatment and goals are exactly what they need. Her professionalism allows her patients to trust that they are not only in good hands, but the best hands.

Kayla started our Dry Needling service line in Physical Therapy because she cared about the quality of care we provide for patients. Kayla cares about her co-workers in a way that helps each of us take great care of all our patients with support and collaboration. It is not unlike Kayla to seek out a nurse, physician, or other practitioner to discuss a patient.

This ensures that the patient receives the best care possible, but also helps foster a collegial environment where the health care team is able to collaborate and learn from one another. When the Institute for Movement and Orthopedics was designed, we envisioned a facility where patients get the benefit of receiving care in a single place, where their health care team works together to provide the absolute best treatment. Kayla embodies that vision each day. Congratulations to Kayla on the Sunflower Award, you deserve the honor!" — Linda Klinger, Director of Rehabilitation Services and Wellness.

Others Nominated — Dan Nitschke, Med Surg/ICU; Peggy Sue Gerner, Med Surg/ICU; Mason Zantow, Process Improvement; Jacqueline Schultz, Reference Lab; Colleen Turinski, Family Practice, Juneau; and Doug Abraham, Information Technology.

Jackie Selken, Food and Nutrition

JULY 2019 — Jackie was nominated by Maureen Ehlert, co-worker.

From Jim Feil, BDCH Director of Food and Nutrition — "Jackie has been working in the Food and Nutrition Department for 7 years. She started out as the Food Service Supply Worker, responsible for the deliveries, organization of store room and coolers, as well as inventory management. In 2017, the task of ordering the food supplies from our various vendors was added to her responsibilities. With over 700 meals served daily, ordering all the needed food and supplies is no small undertaking. This necessitated a change in her title to that of Food Service Purchasing Associate. Jackie is very organized and prides herself on making sure the team has what they need, when they need it. She is a model team member, helping others without being asked and offering suggestions for process improvement. Jackie is most definitely deserving of this award. We are very proud of her accomplishment and are fortunate to have her in our Department."

Others Nominated — Amy Kaminski, Home Health; Liz Schliewe, Patient Accounts; Marlene Poellot, Food and Nutrition; LuAnn Vande Slunt, Environmental Services; Vicki Christian, Medical Records; Jeanette Gorr, Home Health; Susan Clark, Occupational Therapy; Trisha Gorsuch, Hillside Manor; Sarah Mahlum-Buske, Wound Care; Megan Casey, Home Health.

Susan Clark, OT, Rehabilitation Services

APRIL 2019 — Susan was nominated by patient Deb Pascoe:

“I received occupational therapy from Susan Clark both prior to and following shoulder surgery. This continuity of care enhanced the rehabilitation process and having a previous therapy rapport with a therapist was beneficial related to communication style and education preferences. Susan is kind, cordial, professional, gives excellent explanations and also is proficient in motivating the patient to achieve their goal, through written, verbal, and demonstration approaches. When I completed Occupational Therapy and was in need for Physical Therapy, Susan ensured that my new therapist knew my applicable history. Susan also uses appropriate humor to influence the patient’s motivation. It was a great experience to partner with Susan and Beaver Dam Community Hospital Rehab Services for my rehab needs. Susan’s approach to change or modify exercises or modifications based on the need of the day was an additional benefit. BDCH Rehab will be my recommendation of choice."

Susan has been working at BDCH for over 20 years, and is an amazing therapist and coworker who is extremely committed to showing empathy and compassion in everything she does. Susan is always concerned with how others are doing and is famous for her phrase, “is there anything I can do to make your day better.” Every patient she sees and all of her teammates in rehab benefit greatly from their interactions with her. She is an excellent example for all to follow.

Others Nominated — Kari Flick, BDCH Medical Clinics; Dody Dailey, Environmental Services; Amanda Tallmann, Environmental Services; Beth Steinbeck, BDCH Medical Clinics; Andrea Meyer, Hillside Manor; Cindy Cook, Home Health; Tamara Freeman, Lab; Brenda Kiersten, Medical Imaging; Sherry Bisbee, Pharmacy; Paul Larson, Physical Therapy; Jamie Roen, OP Med/Oncology.

Ruth Ladwig, BDCH Cafe, Food & Nutrition

JANUARY 2019 — Ruth was nominated by Richard and Linda Aide:

“We exercise at the hospital fitness center and then eat breakfast in the hospital cafeteria. Ruth cooks up breakfast to order for those who come to the cafeteria. Ruth knows everyone by name and if she doesn’t know your name she asks, so she can call you by name.  Often, she even knows what you want to order, and if not, she asks, 'What would you like today?' She is an excellent cook and fixes your breakfast just the way you like it. Ruth had to go through cancer treatment and worked as much as possible during her treatment and did it in a cheerful way without complaint. Ruth is also caring and concerned about everyone and notices when her 'regulars' are missing. Ruth is the kind of employee that in our opinion deserves the Sunflower Award."

Ruth has worked in the Food and Nutrition Department for almost 18 years. You can most often find her at the Café grill making breakfast and lunch entrees to order, and chatting it up with her devoted "regulars." Ruth makes a point of learning your name and remembering what you tend to like so she can make suggestions. If you are not a regular, you soon will be after seeing the care and detail she puts into every meal prepared and how she always makes you feel like family.

Others Nominated — Amy Kellum, Registration; Brenda Gubbels, Activities; Kim Daniels, Home Health; Laurie Krebsbach, Surgery; Michelle Jesko, Wound Care; Rachel Schraufnagel, Physical Therapy; Susan Clark, Occupational Therapy; and Tammy Mueller, Hillside Manor.

Alison Capoyianes, Kids Care Teacher, 4K

SEPTEMBER 2018 — Alison was nominated by Kim and Tom Carroll, parents whose children attend Kids Care. Alison’s capabilities as a teacher for young children is best explained by Kim:

“I knew her skills with the very young but did not know how she would be able to handle a particularly challenging group of 5 year olds. She absolutely astounded me with her abilities to run the classroom and I attribute so much of my son’s growth directly to her. She fostered in him a love of art, storytelling and encouraged his creativity which was especially important due to him already mastering much of what the class was working on in more of the core curriculum. Ms. Alison partnered with us as parents. She kept us informed of progress individualized to our son. I am certain she took the responsibility of educating each child individually as she did for our son and because of that I feel the class of as a whole is set up and prepared for kindergarten next year. Ms. Alison is a caring, compassionate, professional and extremely capable individual with a true talent for educating and developing children.”

Alison graduated in 2011 with her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development from UW-Green Bay. She has worked at Kids Care for 3 ½ years and has been working in the field of Early Childhood Education since 2012. During that time she has worked with children of all ages and says she enjoys watching the children learn and grow and helping them to thrive in their day-to-day lives.

Others nominated — Breann Stange, Brittany Ickes, Chelsea Christie, Cindy Cook, Dawn Cundy, Deanna Johnson, Elaina Gonzalez, Helen Leystra, Jessica Anderson, Jessica Breunig, Kathy Bates, Kevin Wippermann, Laurie Krebsbach, Lola Sailer, Nancy Turck, Nicole Hughes, Rebecca Chanto, Roxanne Haberkorn, William Seifert.
