Breast tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, is the next generation of digital mammography. State-of-the-art three-dimensional imaging provides clearer images, increasing cancer detection rates and decreasing false positives. In fact, tomosynthesis has been shown to detect lethal cancers 41 percent better than standard mammography, while reducing recall rates by 15 percent.
How does it work? By showing radiologists images in three dimenstions, tomosynthesis reduces the masking effects of tissue density by reducing tissue overlap, providing more accurate readings. This allows for more precise indications of size, shape and location of abnormalities, and can also improve the likelihood of identifying multiple tumors, which occur in 15 percent of breast cancer patients.
