Tomosynthesis (3D Mammography)

BDCH was the first in Dodge County to offer Tomosynthesis, the latest in breast health diagnostics.

  • Provides clearer images
  • 3D imaging reduces tissue overlap and the masking effect of tissue density, increasing cancer detection rates and decreasing false positives
  • Improves accuracy in pinpointing size, shape and location of abnormalities
  • Helps detect cancers at earlier stages, resulting in higher survival rates
  • Reduces number of false positives and unnecessary callbacks
  • Improved likelihood of detecting multiple breast tumors, which occur in 15 percent of breast cancer patients

Digital Mammography

BDCH was the first hospital in the region to offer Digital Mammography for immediate image availability and greater patient comfort. Digital Mammography uses computers and specially designed digital detectors to produce an image that can be displayed on a high-resolution computer monitor in a matter of seconds.

  • Digital Mammography offers many benefits:
  • Improved image quality, especially for dense breast tissue
  • Quicker results and reduced exam time for patients
  • Physician manipulation of images for higher contrast and close up views
  • Reduced need for retakes due to over or under exposure of film
  • Images can be easily stored and transmitted in a streamlined manner

Mammotome® Breast Biopsy System

BDCH was also proud to provide the region's first Mammotome® Biopsy System for minimally invasive biopsy, with reduced scarring and often no need for stitches.

Using the Mammotome® Biopsy System, doctors can more accurately diagnose breast abnormalities without the need for open surgery.

Once an abnormality is found, a Mammotome® probe is inserted through a small, ¼-inch incision and the abnormal tissue is gently collected. This can be done in under an hour in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia with minimal pain, scarring and recovery time.

This also offers women the option of having non-cancerous breast lumps such as fibroadenomas removed without facing open surgery.

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy System

The BDCH Breast Health Program recently acquired the Stereotactic Breast Biopsy system, completing its comprehensive continuum of breast health services, which include digital mammography and the Mammotome® Breast Biopsy System. Stereotactic breast biopsy is designed to minimize patient discomfort and maximize accuracy.
