“I care for people in a manner that is genuine and heartfelt, because serving people is the only thing I’ve ever really put any value in.”
Scott Borkenhagen, M.D., is a psychiatrist who is board certified in adult psychiatry and trained in child/adolescent psychiatry. In adults, Dr. Borkenhagen treats bipolar disorder, substance abuse, schizophrenia, trauma and more. Common child/adolescent issues he addresses are mood disorders, depression and anxiety, although he cares for most mental health concerns.
“A serious car accident in high school was a wake-up call for me and inspired me to do more with my life,” Dr. Borkenhagen said. “During my work in a group home for children and performing rotations in medical school I realized the incredible need that exists, and that what I truly wanted was to listen to people, learn their stories and help them cope in healthy ways.”
Born and raised in Wisconsin, Dr. Borkenhagen adheres to the therapeutic alliance, which is rooted in active listening and showing each patient he cares as a catalyst to authentic interaction that paves the way for progress and healing.
“The most important factor is I don’t give up,” Dr. Borkenhagen said. “Albert Einstein was asked once if he was a genius, and he said ‘no, I’m not a genius, I just don’t give up.’ That always resonated with me, because I feel that’s what separates the good from the great, regardless of field.”
Dr. Borkenhagen earned his Bachelor of Science at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and his Master of Science from Chicago Medical School. He received his medical degree and completed his residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and performed a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Southern Illinois University.
In his spare time, Dr. Borkenhagen spends time with his two children and runs a sabermetrics website. He’s also run three marathons and toured and recorded with his own rock band.
