Early Detection

Early Detection is Your Best Protection 12 Months of the Year
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer; however, when detected early, the chance for cure is nearly 100%. Regular screening for breast cancer is an important part of your health plan.

The American Cancer Society recommends guidelines for the early detection of breast cancer:

Age 40 and over
  Annual mammogram
Annual clinical breast examination by a health care provider – this should be done close to the time of the mammogram
  Monthly breast self-exam

Age 20 – 39
Clinical breast examination by a doctor or nurse every 3 years
  Monthly breast self-exam

Family History of Breast Cancer
If you have a history of breast cancer in your family, discuss mammography screening guidelines with your health care provider.
Schedule your mammogram per your provider’s recommendation. *A physician order is not required for a screening mammogram for women age 40 and older.
