Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world. During acupuncture treatment, very fine needles are inserted into specific points on the body. The patient then lies still on a comfortable treatment table for a period of time, usually around 30 minutes, with the needles in place.

What does acupuncture feel like?
Acupuncture needles are metallic, solid, and hair-thin. People experience acupuncture differently, but most feel no or minimal pain as the needles are inserted. Some people are energized by treatment, while others feel relaxed. Improper needle placement, movement of the patient, or a defect in the needle can cause soreness and pain during treatment. This is why it is important to seek treatment from a qualified acupuncture practitioner.

What conditions can be treated with acupuncture?
According to the National Institutes of Health Consensus Statement on Acupuncture, the procedure can be effective for nausea and vomiting after surgery and chemotherapy and for postoperative dental pain. It may also be useful as treatment for addiction, stroke rehabilitation, headache, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, osteoarthritis, low-back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and asthma; and it has been shown to provide pain relief and improve function for people with osteoarthritis of the knee.

Acupuncture is used for many other conditions as well. In order to discover whether acupuncture can help you, speak with a qualified acupuncturist.
